A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
