The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
