Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying these treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
